For the second year in a row, as part of Flex Fun, Cascade High School Leadership class hosted a 3v3 basketball tournament. Students signed up with their friends and competed against each other to win a medal and bragging rights. While some teams were more focused on the excitement and fun of the event, others were in it to win it. All 12 teams had great sportsmanship and cheered each other on. The event wasn’t only a hit for participants, it was well attended by fans as well; students who didn’t play made signs and cheered their classmates on to victory.

“Kaston, Ryan, Angel, and Jones were the toughest opponent to go up against, because they are athletic, and Kaston is tall,” said Tovar.

The tournament lasted two days and had three rounds, each consisting of eight-minutes games. In the end, the winning team was composed of senior CHS basketball players: Fernando Tovar (12), Kai Lewman (12), and Hunter Stutzman (12). These senior boys put up a good fight and competed against fellow CHS basketball teammates Jaxson Groby (10) and Jonas Johnson (10) and their teammate Will Beibesheimer in an intense final game. The buzzer rang and the scoreboard announced a tie. The boys played into overtime and the final shot made determined the win. “Kaston, Ryan, Angel, and Jones were the toughest opponent to go up against, because they are athletic, and Kaston is tall,” said Tovar. For attendee Noah Copson (9) the most memorable part of the finals was “when Jonas scored a point in the finals.”

Team TBD (to be determined), Kaston Dillon (12), Jones Duncan (12) Angel Sandoval (11) and Ryan Denega (11) complemented each other after winning the game to go into the semi-finals. All the teams had great sportsmanship, but this team stood out from the student section the most. Theodore Everson (9), an active member of the student section, said what stood out to him was “when they complement each other when they score.”

For this 3v3 basketball tournament, there were a lot of clever names but this one stands out by far. Team ‘Bricked Up’ which consisted of Haakon Scheibler (12), Teyva Dillon (10), Tillie Leroy (12), and Cassidy Gillespie (11). Scheibler explained their team name: “In Minecraft, you throw down bricks but in basketball, you throw the ball up.” This team wore Minecraft shirts with sleeves cut off in keeping with their theme.

Congratulations to Fernando, Kai and Hunter for their win. Who will take the championship next year?
