Being able to balance your personal life along with school can sometimes be very difficult. Regarding school takes up a lot of a teens time. It’s good to learn how to balance school with life outside of school because it can greatly affect mental health, time management, your overall schedule, etc.
“When I’m working or really busy with school I try and go on walks or go outside and do some sort of physical activity or do something that’s more relaxing than working or school,” said Anja Lundgren (10).
There are a few things that you can do and put into your daily schedule that can help you balance your school and personal life. One of those is planning events out. “I do plan out my day by first waking up and immediately making a to-do list in a notebook and this helps me in my day by making a goal and tasks to complete,” claimed Ingrid Stockman (9). Planning your days and making lists such as To- Do lists can be great to keep you organized. This can help you create an image of what's going to happen in your day and plan out what and how you're going to get it done. It can help you balance both school and life and get what you need to get done. Remember to create a schedule that you can stick with and get things done.
Relating to planning, another strategy that can help students balance is setting goals. Whether it’s goals for the hour, for the day, or for the week it’s good to set realistic and defined goals for yourself. This can also help motivate you to complete required projects and have more stress-free time for fun.
The next strategy you can practice, to help you balance both school and personal life is time management. This is a great skill to have when it comes to trying to get tasks done in both school and life outside of school, although it can be difficult to do sometimes as a teenager so it can take practice. “I think personally something that helps me with time management is setting a time for yourself like if it’s really hard for you like it is for me, I like to set a time where I have to do the task,” stated Kikkan Brine (10). This not only helps students stay organized, but it helps them stay on track to being successful in and outside of school. According to the Department of Education, “[Time management] is an important factor in keeping students organized and avoiding procrastination, and ultimately leads to academic success.”
Lastly, whether you have a busy week or are studying for finals, you must make sure you make time to prioritize your mental and physical health. This means taking breaks while studying, doing chores, etc. and taking care of your body. This can mean hydrating, getting enough sleep, and eating good food. “When I’m working or really busy with school I try and go on walks or go outside and do some sort of physical activity or do something that’s more relaxing than working or school,” said Anja Lundgren (10). Make sure to manage your time between school and other things well, but when planning out your schedule make sure to not overwork yourself and fit in time to take breaks.
