How to Enjoy Winter as a Local

Christmas Town, USA. Tree lighting in Leavenworth brings bright colors and a lot of tourists. “The thing that I enjoy about Christmas lighting is how it makes our town pop and stand out from other towns, it also has great photo opportunities,” Indica Mendoza (10).

Many locals have mixed emotions about winter in Leavenworth. Some love how the town looks decorated with the fluffy snow, and others are worried about the tourists flooding the town. Although Leavenworth has some downsides, it also has its pleasurable values. There is a little bit of everything for everyone's taste: outdoor athletic activities, calm activities, and fulfilling treats.

“Leavenworth has majestic views during the winter when I'm in the car I like looking out the window and admire the snow on the mountains and trees,” explained Daniela Alvarez (12).

One thing that many locals and tourists like doing once the snow starts piling up is sledding. The most popular location for sledding is on the hill at Front Street Park. Since it can get busy locals like to find their own secret hill. To have a great sledding experience you need to have a solid plan, first make sure all of your sleds are ready, figure out a day that will work out with your friends, make sure to be geared up for the weather, then it's time to find a hill that will work perfectly for sledding.

Xiodali Guzman (10) shares her excitement about sledding: "Even though it’s super cold sometimes, I have a lot of fun, especially with friends.  We goof around a lot; we try different things like trying to sled down standing up, trying to balance myself, sled down backwards, or sled down with three of us on the sled. I don’t know it's just fun sledding when there's a lot of snow, it's super fun.”

If you aren't in the mood for thrill-seeking on a sled, you could always go and take a stroll while admiring the Christmas lights around town. As locals know Leavenworth is quite popular due to its Christmas lights, and during weekends the downtown area is packed with tourists. A great time to go for a walk around town is possibly on a weekday around sundown; downtown isn't as busy and if you're lucky you could maybe witness a nice sunset with the mountains. Afterward, I would recommend visiting a shop and buying a hot beverage to warm up again.

If you are just in need of a calm day in nature during the winter, Leavenworth has quite a lot to offer. Start off with visiting a shop downtown for a sweet treat for your adventure.  A shop many locals and tourists enjoy is the Gingerbread Factory. They have great cookies, drinks, cinnamon rolls, and other flavorful foods. You also need to make sure you dress appropriately for the weather; I would also recommend bringing someone along. During the winter months, as the snow sits on the mountains Leavenworth is full of views that look like paintings. After preparing the essentials walk down to the barn beach trails for a majestic walk.

“Leavenworth has majestic views during the winter when I'm in the car I like looking out the window and admire the snow on the mountains and trees,” explained Daniela Alvarez (12).

Winter in Leavenworth can be a handful, but looking over the mountain of tourists you can find unique activities to enjoy. Activities that haven't been found by tourists, if you are looking for an adventure you can go find your own hidden gems in Leavenworth.
