How To: Get Ready for Summer

Updated: May 9, 2023

Summer is an exciting time for students of all ages. It marks the end of another school year and is a time to relax and have fun until the next year begins. Getting ready for this season is important to fully be able to enjoy the summer without worry. Four things may help you prepare for a fun summer include: planning for any trips you are taking, shopping for all your summer gear, learning how to keep yourself and others safe while on the water, or getting a summer job and earning some money.

In the climate that we live in, everyone knows that the summer heat can be severe. Summer clothes, sunscreen, and outdoor adventure supplies are essential for any fun summer day. Many local stores sell the supplies you will need:

  • Sage Mountain Natural Foods sells locally sourced products including natural sunscreens.

  • Arlberg sells bikes, repair parts and additional gear for bikes, and other outdoor gear.

  • Der Sportsman sells adventuring supplies for rock climbing, fishing, hiking, and more, as well as quality shoes and clothes.

  • Leavenworth Outdoor Center provides guided rafting and kayaking trips, as well as inner tube rentals for floating the river.

  • Whistlepunk Ice-cream provides the perfect treat to end the day.

You can also browse downtown for all your summer fashion and swim gear:

  • Copper Creek

  • Black Swan

  • Temptations Boutique

  • Posy

  • Magenta Boutique

  • Das Thrift Has

Summer is known for opportunities to relax and have fun on the fly, but if you want to go on a trip, it does take some planning. If you are road tripping with family or friends, checking the climate and weather of your destination can help you when you pack. Fun games to play in the car like I spy, Car Bingo, and Find the License Plate help the time pass more quickly. If you are flying within the United States or internationally, buying your ticket and planning how many bags you are taking ahead of time can make your airport experience quicker and more enjoyable.

You don’t need to leave the state or country to have fun during the summer. Our local Icicle River is a beautiful place to hang out and cool off during the summer months. However, it is especially important to keep yourself and those you are with safe while on the river. When inner tubing or rafting down the river, jumping in the water is always a good way to cool off. Just remember, go swimming when the river is deep, and calm enough and always float with your feet downstream to avoid head injuries. When you are at one of our beautiful local lakes, it is a good idea to either swim in shallow water, with a life vest, or with a friend.

For many students, getting ready for life after high school requires earning money. Once summer hits, many jobs open such as lifeguarding, teaching swim lessons, and more. Freshman Teyva Dillon worked as a swim instructor last year. She said, “You work for about three and a half hours in the morning split into 30-minute sessions with different kids.” If you are looking for a fun, not time-consuming job to earn some money over the summer, applying for a job at the local pool is an excellent choice. Other jobs include guiding rafting or kayaking trips, being on a trail crew to help repair local hiking spots or collecting inner tubes from the river for specific companies. Some of these jobs require certain certifications. You could even start your own business, like dog walking, babysitting, or yard work.

Making the most of your summer can start off your next school year even better. Getting your summer supplies, planning your trips, getting a job, and having water safety helps kick off another great summer.
