How to Run an Effective ASB Campaign

Freshman ASB officers stand in front of their newly decorated door for the school wide homecoming competition. “I liked how incredibly creative everyone was. It was cool how people interpreted their themes differently with their different ideas,” explained Kate Smith (9), the freshman class treasurer.

In order to run a successful ASB election, one must first possess the qualities of a good leader. ASB students oversee school fundraisers, plan events (with the help of the Leadership class) and hear/act on feedback from their peers. In addition to being a good leader, they must also be able to listen to and work well with others.

The key parts of running an election are having funny and catchy posters that people will remember. Making sure everyone knows your name and thinks highly of you is also very important. It is also important to have fun running for ASB and not take yourself super seriously.

“Some level of creativity, a creative catch phrase making everything look like it belongs together is important for running an effective campaign,” stated CHS English and Publications teacher Ms. Robison. “I think it would be nice if it was important to have actual information in your election. I don't know if that's realistic. From an advisor’s standpoint, it's most important to have people in ASB who have some skills and experience.  The idea nis that people are voting based on who they think is most qualified. I think people should run, because it's a good resume builder and a good way to get involved in your school. It's also really good l life experience, because doing the kinds of things that you do in ASB is like a lot of jobs. It also brings in a lot of really good skills,” said Robison.

Get people to like you. This is arguably the most important step because the fact of the matter is that no matter how good of a leader you are, no one will vote for you if they do not think highly of you. Make sure that all your classmates like being around you and know that you are responsible. Interact with your other classmates outside of just your friend group.

Have funny and memorable posters. Honestly, having good posters is not necessarily as important. With that said, making posters can help advertise and let people know what position you're running for and why you want it. Having funny posters is a good way to get people to remember you. It can also help to make a funny or interesting post on social media letting people know you are running and why they should vote for you.

Try to have fun. Do not put too much pressure on yourself to win the election. It is important to think about why you’re running, whether for college applications, to get involved with the school, or to help out with planning events. Remember that even if you do not win, there are other great ways to get involved. Even if you do not get the results you want, you still have a great base for future campaigns and more knowledge of what it takes to be a leader.

“Come at the election from a different angle, be creative and make posters that catch people's eyes. Overall, talk to people and just be nice,” offered Ellie Holm (12), class secretary for three years. When prompted about how Holm won these elections she eagerly responded: “Well, no one else was running.”
