How to Start a Productive Morning in High School

Updated: May 9, 2023

CHS students show up to school ready to tackle their workload due to productive morning routines.

Have you ever wished that you were more productive in the mornings before school? Productivity in the mornings is a great start to the day having many positive benefits. “A good morning routine can positively influence your attitude, energy level, and performance throughout the day,” stated Harvard Professional Development. It starts by making a routine or schedule that you can run through in the morning to become more productive. Creating a routine can include gaining small habits such as journaling or planning your day, making your bed, or starting your day with a healthy breakfast. It just starts by creating these habits to produce a routine in the morning that will lead to you having a motivated morning and feeling that way throughout the day.

Helpful Steps to Start a Productive Morning

To be able to start a productive morning you should have habits or routines to complete and be consistent with them. That means no skipping a day. “I prepare all my stuff in the morning, and I make my lunch every morning. I put my headphones in and get my work done,” said Ben Jerome (10) when asked what some steps are to be productive in the morning. When you have a routine or steps at the start of your day it gets you in the habit of being productive and having a rhythm. A routine could be listed in a to-do list form, so you know what needs to be done. Such as starting by making your bed, eating breakfast, hydrating, and any other steps that need to be done in your morning.

You want to start with steps that you can be efficient with, but also do not overload yourself with too much to do at a certain point. "Definitely eat breakfast, drink a lot of water, and work in chunks, don’t be like working for four hours. Try and do like an hour chunk with a couple of breaks,” said Isabel Menna (11). Having an efficient and structured morning routine can be helpful to have a productive morning routine, but you want to let yourself reset while working at being productive.

“Certainly, effective, and efficient workflows are critical components of productivity. But sometimes it is important to take a step back for personal reflection,” expressed Sally Susman in a blog written by Harvard Professional Development. Personal reflection is important when starting your day. This means resetting and writing down your thoughts or planning out your day which can help you reach your goals and reflect on yourself.

How Having a Productive Morning Routine Affects You and Your Day

Starting your day with a motivated and productive routine can have positive impacts on you throughout your day. It can impact your mood, energy, performance, and motivation levels throughout the day. “If I can get a lot of my work done in the morning, that just makes me more relaxed through the rest of the day,” expressed Isabel Menna (11). If you start your day with making small accomplishments like making your bed or big ones like finishing an essay due that day, it can make you more relaxed knowing you already have accomplished goals and you can be more motivated throughout the rest of your day without feeling stressed.

“Better stress levels lead to improved mental health, more time to relax, and less anxiety,” stated in “Health Benefits of Having a Routine” written by Northwestern Medicine. Along with improving aspects of mental health, routines can improve energy levels.

“[My routine] makes me feel better and makes me have full energy,” stated Ben Jerome (10). Starting your day off productively and setting goals in the morning can make you feel more energized to get things done because you set those goals for yourself. It can also improve your mood throughout the day because you start the day off by getting yourself motivated to get things done.

Productive mornings can have many positive impacts on you and your day. Although having a routine with steps every morning can improve your motivation and productiveness, you do not need to have a ton of steps or habits in the morning. Yes, that can be productive and can help you feel more motivated but being productive in the mornings can just be considered spending your time wisely and getting what you need to get done according to your schedule. With whatever you need to get done in the morning, make sure you don’t overwhelm yourself with tasks to do while starting your day. Always make sure to take time to let yourself take a break and re-set, so that you can go back feeling motivated to get things done and have that productive morning.
