Cheese Rolling, a game developed by “The Interviewed” on Steam, is a fun, comedic take on the old English tradition of cheese rolling.
The tradition of cheese rolling was first documented in 1826. While the exact origin of the sport in England is unknown, participants have long chased a rolling cheese wheel down a hill, with the winner historically keeping the cheese as a prize.
In the game, players roll down a hill chasing a wheel of cheese. There are three modes:
- Regular mode, where the cheese rolls naturally down the hill, and players try to catch it.
- Living cheese, where one player controls the cheese, adding a chaotic twist.
- Crowns, similar to regular mode, but every 10 points earns a special “crown” point.
Cheese Rolling can be played online or offline. In offline mode, players compete against AI in regular mode only. The online experience is where the game truly shines, allowing friends to compete together. Playing with a full lobby of eight people adds to the chaos, as players jump, roll, and push each other while maneuvering up, down, left, and right to catch the cheese.
The mode I enjoyed most online was living cheese. The added chaos of a player controlling the cheese made the game especially entertaining. When a player becomes the cheese, the cheese switches hands once caught. The best strategy I found was to stay near the top of the hill. Because other players expect the cheese to move quickly, they often overshoot and struggle to catch up.
Cheese Rolling successfully brings the old English tradition into a modern, entertaining format.
Overall, the experience was fun and engaging. Whether playing online with friends, competing with random players, or challenging AI offline, Cheese Rolling successfully brings the old English tradition into a modern, entertaining format. I rated the game 8/10.
