On Wednesday, February 5th both the Cascade High Schools boys' and girls' basketball teams celebrated their seniors in a night filled with emotion and competition. The Kodiaks, both girls and boys, faced off against the Manson Trojans. This meeting was the second of their season. The girls played first; seniors Maizy Groff and Tevya Dillion dominated the court and led their team to hard-fought victory. The lady Kodiaks won 45-39. The boys played next, led by seniors Marshet Redman (12), Ethan Davis (12), Ivan Alejandre (12), Jackson Feeney (12), Will Biebesheimer (12) and Jesper Koornstra (12). The boys put on a show as they drastically improved from their last meeting with the Trojans where they were defeated by a margin of 30 points. This time, the boys made it a close game and fought all the way to the end, unfortunately the boys lost 48-67. Win or lose, senior night meant so much more to the players than just a regular game. Parents, friends and family of seniors from both the girls and boys basketball teams, the pep band, and the winter cheer squad came to center court before the games and were recognized for their years of dedication to Cascade High School and to their teams. Senior night is fun for the parents and fans, but most importantly, the seniors themselves as it signifies the end of their high school winter sports careers. In the last four years, these teens have turned into young adults with Cascade basketball teaching them many valuable life lessons along the way.
“I’ve played all four years, I started on C team and had to work my way up. That definitely helped to improve my work ethic, and taught me if you want something you got to work for it, even though we haven’t been too successful, this team showed me that when you get hit you gotta get back up,” said varsity basketball captain and center Ivan Alejandre (12).
“I’ve played the game of basketball for thirteen years and at Cascade for four, through all my years at Cascade, I learned that it’s the journey, not the destination and that basketball is about having fun, not winning or losing,” said varsity captain and point guard Ethan Davis (12).
“This was my second year of high school basketball for Cascade, this season taught me determination and to work not just for myself but for the next generation of athletes at Cascade,” said Teyva Dillion (12), girls varsity captain.
“Playing these last three years taught me a lot about being a team and to stay disciplined when times get tough. This season has also taught me so much about being a leader,” said Maizy Groff (12), also a girls varsity captain and point guard.
The boys’ season concluded a game later with a record of 4-18. While the girls went on to compete in the District 5 tournament and made it to the final round before being knocked out and finished 17-11.
