On March fifth at 5:00 p.m., the Unidos club hosted a movie night to celebrate El 5 de Mayo. Unidos is a club meant to provide support and a sense of belonging to bilingual bicultural students. The members worked hard to prepare for this event to raise funds for the club and to have an event that both parents and students could enjoy.

The club presidents worked to prepare the events. “We printed out tickets and we made flyers and put them in the concession,” said Ivan Alejandre (12), one of the club’s presidents.

Other club members helped to promote the event.  “I started preparing post[s] to promote and I helped my mom prepare some food like popcorn and duros,” said Jocelyn Olguin (12), the promotional representative for the club.

Before the event, the Unidos club members came together after school to set up tables outside the lunchroom for concessions. In previous meetings, they planned the time, the date, what movie we were going to show, and the food prices. The movie that was displayed was A Million Miles Away, which is a movie about Jose M. Hernandez who was born in Mexico and used to work in the fields. He later pursued becoming a member on a

Space Shuttle mission.

“I think we should do more of these types of events because it builds community with the students and families,” said Miriam Arias (10), a member of the Unidos club.

Club members enjoyed participating in the event. “I think we should do more of these types of events because it builds community with the students and families,” said Miriam Arias (10), a member of the Unidos club.

After the movie ended, the Unidos club raised around $220. Since it was teacher appreciation week, the leftover concession food was donated to the teachers. “I think it went well, even though we didn’t get as many people as we expected, I felt like it was still good. We still provided a free movie for the community, and we let people have a little taste of diversity,” said Alejandre.

“I am really proud of what the club has done, it didn’t seem like it was going to work out at first but after all, I saw everyone become more confident in themselves and I felt that that was going to help them a lot in the future to be more like leaders,” explained Jeffry Palacios (12), the other president of the club.

Unidos is a new club that was introduced by Mrs. Weil this year. She offered the officers the opportunity to become leaders. The club was founded with a goal of raising scholarship money to help support students taking Drivers Education Classes and from there, it has organized many other fundraising events and activities.
