To kick off the winter sports season—including basketball and wrestling—students competed in a series of class competitions designed to build excitement and school spirit. Activities included stacking giant boxes as high as possible, learning the cheer “Up Here in the Valley,” taught by CHS cheerleaders in preparation for the Kodiak Krazies student section, and playing pep band music under the direction of Jace Rowland.
The event also featured ASL students signing the national anthem and representatives from all winter sports teams competing in a spirited game of Wig Grab. Managed by Max Spiegel, the event successfully generated hype for winter sports, especially basketball, while celebrating Kodiak pride and officially launching the winter season.
The CHS girls varsity basketball team opened the season on Tuesday, December 2, with a close 40–42 loss to Wenatchee. The team quickly responded with a decisive 59–17 win against Manson on Thursday, December 4. On Saturday, December 6, the Kodiaks fell to Waterville, 33–58, before bouncing back with a dominant 74–8 victory over Entiat on Monday, December 15. The momentum continued with a 53–32 win against Chelan on Thursday, December 19, followed by a 57–36 victory over Quincy on Sunday, December 22.
The girls junior varsity team also had an impressive start to the season. JV opened with a 45–14 win against Wenatchee on Tuesday, December 2, followed by a 42–20 victory over Waterville on Saturday, December 6. The team continued its momentum with a 41–0 shutout against Entiat on Monday, December 15.
The CHS boys varsity basketball team opened its season on Tuesday, December 2, with a 57–45 win against Trope High School. The Kodiaks then hosted Manson on Thursday, December 4, where they fell 39–54. On Saturday, December 6, the team bounced back with a 55–33 road victory at Waterville High School. Later in the month, the Kodiaks suffered a 49–38 loss to Entiat on Monday, December 15, followed by a loss to Chelan, 19–81, on Thursday, December 19.
The boys junior varsity team also began its season in early December. JV opened with a 36–27 win against Manson on Thursday, December 4, before falling to Waterville, 20–44, on Saturday, December 6. The team closed the stretch with a 43–25 win over Entiat on Monday, December 15.
Both the CHS boys and girls basketball teams will return to action on Thursday, January 2, when they host Cashmere High School in a home matchup. The girls varsity team is scheduled to tip off at 3:30 p.m., followed by the boys varsity game at 5:00 p.m.
Whether fans come to support the teams on the court, cheer alongside the cheer squad, listen to the pep band, watch the new stunt crew in action, or catch a glimpse of the newly reinvigorated Kodiak mascot, there is something for everyone at CHS basketball games. In addition to the action on the court, graduating classes raise funds through concession sales, and TSA will be selling Whistlepunk Ice Cream, offering even more ways for the Kodiak community to show its school spirit and support CHS programs.
