CHS Students Perform in The Nutcracker

High school dancers perform the dance of the snowflakes, as they lead Clara and the nutcracker to the land of sweets. Playing the role of godfather, Ella Ising (9) states: “I love the poofs we get to hold, and I love how the little snowflakes and big snowflakes were put into one dance I thought that was really cool.”

On December 10th and 11th Edelweiss Dance Academy performed a classical ballet number entitled The Nutcracker. This now-iconic Christmas show is based on the fairy tale The Nutcracker and the Mouse by E.T.A. Hoffmann. It was later adapted by Alexandre Dumas, and composed by King, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The Nutcracker is about a young girl named Clara who receives a wooden nutcracker doll on Christmas Eve that comes to life and takes her on an adventure to the Land of Sweets.

Since Edelweiss Dance Academy first started it has grown and expanded into what it is today. For many high school dancers, The Nutcracker is something they look forward to every year.

Cyan Warden (9) was the sugarplum fairy (queen of the Land of Sweets).  “My favorite part of being sugar plum fairy was being able to dance the part that I have been looking up to for years and being able to dance it well. My favorite part of The Nutcracker as a whole is that everyone in it is always so positive and being able to dance with people, so kind is an amazing experience, I also love the costumes,” said Warden.

Other high school dancers include Mia Schons as Snowflake Queen, Ella Ising as Godfather, Phaedra Myers as Mother, Marit Helper as Spanish, Georgia Holm as Bluebird, and Coal Fiano as the Arabian.

For most, the end of The Nutcracker this year was a celebration of success and excitement for the next one to come; however, for Fiano it represents his final year at dance and his final performance of the nutcracker.

“It's very bittersweet because I've been a part of this ever sense I moved to Leavenworth about nine years ago and I've grown up in this dance community, I've grown up with Briar, I've grown up with all of these dances so it's very sad knowing that I won't get to do this next year for my senior year. I'm glad other people can have a chance to get the solos I take. My first ever Nutcracker when I was a Russian and we had these weird costumes with these stupid little hats and when we were performing at Vale Elementary School my hat fell off, and I will never forget that as long as I live,” said Fiano.

In addition to being a thrilling time for the dancers, The Nutcracker is also a time for community members and families to come together to help organize kids, run concessions and sell tickets. The Nutcracker is a stunningly breathtaking ballet that is very well known around the world. Edelweiss Dance Academy has a beautiful performance of The Nutcracker that everyone should attend if they have the chance.
