Cascade athletes embraced their month-long fall sports season with all the hard work and passion that they could devote to their chosen sport. Though their usual season is almost 3 months long, nearly doubling their playing time, players made the best of what they could during these unpredictable times.
Boys varsity football started practices over winter break on February 15th and will end practices before their last game on April 2nd. The team has competed against Royal High School in a pre-season jamboree and Chelan, Quincy and Cashmere High Schools with two games left in their seasons. On March 26th they will play Warden High School and compete in a final game on April 2nd against Omak High School. They took the win against Quincy with a score of 33 to 0, but suffered a loss of 13-41 against Chelan and a loss of 21-42 against Cashmere High School. Junior line-backer Colton Latimer explained that, “It has been a rough season with COVID”, but he had “never been more excited for a game” in his life than for the team’s game against Cashmere. Honorary captain and defensive tackle, Cameron Ostrem, explained that his team “always goes out there like it is the last game or practice of the year”, showing the team’s devotion and passion for the sport and the ability to sacrifice for their team.
Girls volleyball started their official training the last week of February and continued to practice through the last full week of March. The team holds a record of 2 to 8. The girls earned wins against Omak and Moses Lake, while lost against their other opponents. They still played whole-heartedly and kept good sportsmanship. Sophomore Giselle Navarro, the team’s outside hitter, explained that her favorite part of her volleyball season this year was, “Team hot yoga because it brought the team together and it was a great experience.” Ruthie Biebesheimer, the Kodiak’s middle blocker, explained that she was “very proud when the team beat a 4A school in 4 sets” when referring to their game against Moses Lake. The volleyball team will play their last two games of the season on March 27th against Waterville and Lake Roosevelt.
Girls soccer also started training at the end of February and currently holds a record of 2 to 4. The team won against Chelan and Cashmere High Schools, but lost against Moses Lake, Eastmont, Wenatchee and Okanogan High Schools. Captain and Senior Molly Wiser, the team’s forward, explained that soccer has impacted her because she has “made a lot of friends” and “learned how to work hard.” One of the soccer team’s mid-fielders, Kodiak Madi Gillespie, said that her favorite part of this year's season was after their win against Cashmere when they sang the team’s fight song on the bus ride back from Cashmere after an intense game. The team will play three more games: playing Cashmere at home on March 27th, Eastmont at home on March 30th and finally Quincy on April 1st.
The Cascade Cross Country Team has been running through the season with strong finishes. The team has had many highlights in their season so far. In the first meet seniors Jerome Jerome and Zoe McDevitt both placed fourth. The team’s March 6th meet had incredible finishes from Junior Lauren Muscutt taking 1st with Zoe McDevitt in 2nd place. The girls team then was led to an overall first place finish. The boys team also came in first overall as Landon Davies took 2nd place and Owen Bard took 6th. In the team’s March 6th and 13th meets both girl’s and boy's teams took first place. In their Walla Walla meet on the 20th, the girls team took second and the boys took first once again. Captain Zoe McDevitt explained that her favorite part is “being back with the team and running again.” Coach Massey revealed just how fun coaching cross country is to him. He said, “I get to work and run with an awesome group of fun kids who aren’t afraid to work hard, and I get to enjoy seeing kids improve their running and do well in races, knowing that I perhaps made at least a small contribution to their success.”
The Cascade Cheer Team continues to support the Kodiak Football Team by being devoted to every game. Captain Sierra Stoddard explained that her favorite part of cheer is “being able to have a closer bond with each teammate.” She also emphasized how much she loves all the silly little memories that the team makes. Sierra is grateful for the team being adaptable to the season as it has been different than any season before. She explained that the team has been able to deal with changes well and stay positive and united. Senior Morgan Colvin said that her favorite part of this year has been “getting to travel to the away games” and she does cheer “to stay involved in school activities while getting to hang out with friends and make new friends.”
Overall, Cascade’s sports teams continue to commit each day to their sports while loving and sacrificing for their teams. Kodiak athletes continue to promote hard work and sportsmanship throughout the community and are full of excitement for a possible normal future in their fall sports next year.
