Girls Soccer Seniors Night

The varsity girls' soccer team lines up for the national anthem before they start the game. “The best thing about senior night was receiving our league trophy and celebrating that success and the win with a huge crowd. The atmosphere was great and just made the last game memorable for the team and us seniors,” said Leslie Mata (12). Photo credit: Georgia Holm

Last Wednesday, October 23, the Cascade High School Girls Soccer Team celebrated their seniors after facing off against Chelan. Going into the game, the team was buoyed by their previous win against Chelan and felt optimistic.  Their confidence was well placed: they dominated the playing field and won the game with a score of 8-0.

“It felt really good to have such a high scoring win on Senior Night. I felt like it represented our success as a team this year and was the perfect way to celebrate our seniors,” said soccer player Savanna Rowles (12).

The success of the girls’ soccer team extended its placing to first in league. The team was awarded the Caribou Trail League (CTL) trophy at the Senior Night. In addition to receiving the CTL award, each senior was given a thoughtfully made poster with photos displaying some of their highlights. The seniors recognized were Mariamne Fonseca, Teyva Dillon, Leslie Matta, Savanna Rowels, and Maizy Groff.

“Senior night is a great way to show appreciation for our seniors, who work really hard in their sports in addition to school. The night is a way for them to get recognition for the community they have built in their sport,” said team member Kate Smith (10).

The triumph at Wednesday night’s game demonstrated much of the hard work the team has put in this season. Though Captain Teyva Dillon (12) had high expectations, she was satisfied with their playing.

“I’m content with the team’s performance. I’m looking forward to seeing if we can keep the connections going when we play more difficult teams,” said Dillon.

Mariamne Fonseca (12) was bumped up to varsity for the first time. She exhibited excellent playing and had an assist.

“I felt so happy and accomplished, because I helped out a teammate,” reflected Fonseca.

Watching the stellar performances of the seniors were the lowerclassman. Team member Kikkan Brine (11) is looking forward to being a senior herself.

“I am so excited to be a senior on the soccer team: I will get seniority at team dinner, and I am also excited to get a banner,” said Brine.

Fellow underclassman and teammate Smith is equally excited for her senior year as a soccer player.

“When I become a senior, I am most looking forward to being a resource for underclassmen who want to learn and have fun while playing soccer,” said Smith.

The Girls Soccer Senior Night was a success, as the enthusiastic cheering in the stands testified.
