The World Cup has been a huge event here at Cascade High School and affected students' lives in many ways. Watching the World Cup i

n the classroom or on a phone, this series of soccer games affected the average student's focus, ability to do work and got some students in sticky situations. For those who do not know, the World Cup is a series of soccer games played by the winning nations from each part

of the world. First, the teams go into the group stages and play against the three other teams in their group desperately trying to get the first or second spot out of the other four nations to go on to the group stages. The group stages look like a tournament bracket (similar to the March Madness basketball tournament in the NBA) and the winners go on to play in the World Cup Final, the most watched event in the world.

A student's morale is one of the most important things when it comes to school. Teachers and students were able to find common ground over their love for the game and support for a particular team. According to Vincent Slette (12) Cascade High School ASB Vice President, “From what I have seen, if a student’s team wins the student would be happier, but at the same time if that team lost that would have a negative effect on that person.” Occasionally, the World Cup was shown by a teacher in classrooms and students would watch it in their free time, creating a great small talk starter.

Every teacher knows that a student on their p

hone could affect their productivity in the classroom and with the World Cup going on that might have gotten worse. Many Cascade High School students had some trouble finishing work with this distraction. According to Angel Sandoval (10), an avid World Cup fan, “Sometimes the World Cup can be distracting when you are trying to get your work done, but all in all its fun to watch.” The World Cup had a lot of negative effects in the classroom, and in many situations even got students in trouble.

Many teachers here at Cascade care about educating the youth of this generation and the distraction provided by the World Cup made that harder. When trying to watch the World Cup on a mobile device it can be hard to be productive, so teachers began taking adolescent’s phones, getting them in trouble. According to Cascade High School ASB Vice President and France fan Vincent Slette (12), “During school there would always be a game on, and I could use my free time watching that, there were some teachers that were chill and would leave the World Cup on for us to watch, but others were not chill and would take our phones when trying to watch.” While watching the World Cup was very enjoyable it got many students into a pickle.

The World Cup 2023 is an event that CHS students and staff will never forget. For good or bad the World Cup affected everyone's lives at CHS. It affected the students' morale, their classroom productivity and, for some, heir discipline records. This year the FIFA World Cup was won by Argentina in a penalty shootout with France. No matter what country someone supports, remember it's always fun to watch.
