Getting involved in school opens many opportunities, whether it’s connecting with classmates, participating in events, or helping the community.
At the beginning of the school year, an event called Club Rush takes place during Flex. This event gives students the chance to explore and sign up for clubs that interest them. Students who help run clubs get to promote them with posters and a dedicated area where others can sign up. If you can’t find a club that grabs your attention, you also have the option to start your own. “There’s a lot of forms you have to fill out and take it to the school board for them to approve the club,” said Adilene Casteneda (12).
Participating in sports is another fun way to be involved. Not only is it competitive, but it’s also a great way to make new friends and explore a new hobby. “I play sports because soccer is one of my passions and I have a lot of fun. I think you should join sports because it helps you learn valuable skills and you can learn how to be dedicated and how to work in a team,” said Arlo Gibbs (12).
There are also elective classes that focus on school involvement, such as Leadership and Publications. “In our EWU Leadership [class] we have a management section that's required, so we have different kids claim events and then manage them. So, me and Micah [Wilder] for example helped manage and set up Club Rush. While we are doing that the other people in class are either getting ready for upcoming events and going through the process of budgeting,” said Ada Missal (11).
In Publications, students create the yearbook and school newspaper. In this class, you can learn the basics of photography, layout, and design, while expanding your writing skills, styles, and formatting. Students also spend time outside of class to meet deadlines.
For students interested in music, CHS offers both choir and band. Students in these classes perform at concerts, football and basketball games, and assemblies. The band also marches in the Autumn Leaf Parade.
Another way to get involved is through volunteering with local nonprofit charities or the school. Opportunities include parking cars during the winter, working concessions at football, volleyball, and soccer games, and participating in events like Soak a Senior, which helps raise money for the senior trip.
Running for ASB is another excellent way to participate in school, develop leadership skills, and have a voice in certain school decisions.
Running for ASB is another excellent way to participate in school, develop leadership skills, and have a voice in certain school decisions. The four positions you can run for are president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer. Anyone can run, but you must promote yourself to convince your graduating class to vote for you. This can be done by putting up flyers or catchy posters throughout the hallways. After voting, the office announces each grade’s ASB officers.
Lastly, participating in Spirit Week is an easy and fun way to get involved with friends. Spirit Week takes place during Homecoming and Prom weeks, with different daily themes for students to dress up for. Participants may also have their photos taken and featured in the yearbook. Next week’s Homecoming spirit days offer a variety of opportunities for students to participate in the culture of CHS.
