Tree lighting in Leavenworth, Washington, is a large event bringing up to 25,000 tourists to the small mountain town. People flock from all over the world to see the beautiful light displays in “Christmas Town USA”. Even though the event may bring Christmas cheer, it can often be a struggle to deal with as a local. However, there are many ways, even as a local, to enjoy the festivities associated with this event.

Begin by checking the official Leavenworth website for updates on the event. This will provide you with essential information such as the date and time, special activities planned, and any tips for parking or traveling during the event. It is best to plan ahead of time before all the tourists arrive to make sure you are prepared for the busy activities.

One issue locals may face is parking in yards. Tourists will often push the boundaries of properties and park or walk into private property. As a local, you can set up signs or even create paid parking if you have a space in which tourists can park if you want to make some extra cash. “Because we live so close to town so we walk to work and we only allow close family to park on our property and we often will just nicely tell tourists not to park on our property,” stated Mylee Hobbs (11).

“I feel like it’s fun to see how many people come to our town to see the lights, but I also think that parking and walking makes it a better experience for myself, so I don't have to deal with the parking situation,” claimed senior Claire Henschied.

If you want to enjoy the festivities, as a local, you have the advantage of knowing the best routes and parking options. Main street can become crowded, so consider arriving early to secure a good spot. Alternatively, carpool with friends or family to reduce the number of vehicles and enhance your experience together. If you live nearby, consider walking or biking to avoid the parking hassle entirely. “I feel like it’s fun to see how many people come to our town to see the lights, but I also think that parking and walking makes it a better experience for myself, so I don't have to deal with the parking situation,” claimed senior Claire Henschied.

To curb the intense crowding associated with the past official lighting ceremony, the city now leaves lights on all day from November 28-February 28.  Many local shops and restaurants will participate in holiday specials and events. If you live in town, you can take the time to stroll through town before the crowds. Enjoy window shopping and grab a warm beverage from a local café such as J5. The Tree Lighting event is a fantastic opportunity to connect with neighbors and friends. Especially if you don’t want to get involved in the main festivities you can plan gatherings with friends and family to celebrate. You can organize a pre-lighting gathering at your home or join friends at a local restaurant.

Leavenworth’s large yearly event can bring a lot of Christmas spirit to the small town and can be a fun experience to enjoy with friends and family. As a local, it can sometimes be frustrating to deal with, but if you can find ways to work around those struggles it can be a fun event to be able to enjoy during Christmas time in Leavenworth, Washington.
