“All the world is made of faith and trust and pixie dust.” Students from Cascade High School and Icicle River Middle School came together to produce this year’s musical: Peter Pan Jr. This musical is a take on J.M. Berrie’s timeless classic that has been adapted for young performers. The cast worked diligently with director Mandi Wickline to whisk audiences way to a place where dreams are born and no one ever grows up.
Peter Pan is a classic story about a boy who never grew up. The story begins in a nursery where the three Darling kids, Wendy, John and Michael, are visited by Peter Pan. Peter decides that Wendy, the oldest of the Darling children, would make a perfect mother for the orphaned children who live on his island. Tinkerbelle sprinkles the Darling children with pixie dust and they fly away following Peter Pan to Neverland. This enchanted island is home to Peter, Tink, the lost boys, Tiger Lily and brave girls, and the scheming Captain Hook and his band of pirates. Hook and Peter Pan have had a long-standing feud when the Darling children arrive. Although the majority of the audience was familiar with this classic storyline, it was still enjoyable to see it reinvented and brought to life again.
For director Mandi Wickline, this will be the last high school musical that she produces. Wickline is planning to move in the near future. I chose Peter Pan because “the seniors and I agreed it needed to be a classic play. Peter Pan was a good option, because it is a musical as well as a fairytale. This is also a storyline both adults and children already know. It's going to be a shortened version, so it's only about sixty minutes. Peter Pan is a fun-loving play and will bring the childhood side out of everyone,” said Wickline.
Students have enjoyed working with Wickline and it is clear she has had a significant impact on many of them. “Mandi cares about all the kids and I can tell she has our best interest in mind. Mandi is always there to talk with us, she is what makes this play so fun to be involved in. I am really sad this is her last play, but it's going to be a great one,” said Branna Loomis, a student playing one of the brave girls in this production.
“Peter Pan is a family friendly show. It includes a lot of upbeat music and catchy songs. The charters are acted out in such creative ways, you will definitely be entertained,” said senior Avette DeMoor who played Smee in this spring’s adaptation.
“My favorite part of this play is the first scene where I get dragged across the stage. The dancing parts are also super fun not only to participate in but also to watch,” said Bohdy Hagedorn who played one of the lost boys in the production.
