Shooting for greatness, one basket at a time—the 2025–26 Kodiak basketball season has come to an end. Both the boys’ and girls’ teams experienced highs and lows throughout the year. The boys finished with a 3–17 record, while the girls had an outstanding season, finishing 17–3.

Boys’ Season: Growth Amid Challenges

The boys started the season strong with a win in their first away game. However, the team faced many adjustments with new coaches, new players, and evolving leadership roles. Team captains Julian Feeney (11), Max Spiegel (12), and Gene Witt (11) guided the team, helping underclassmen improve on the court.

“It was a super fun season; we improved a lot from the beginning to the end. I will miss my friends and teammates the most,” said Spiegel.

Despite a tough season, the boys showed grit, determination, and consistent effort. Every game was competitive, and the student section brought energy and excitement—some students even acted as ESPN-style reporters for the last home game.

“The biggest highlight of the season was our last game against Omak. It was very close, and we only lost by five, which was a lot better than our first matchup,” said Witt.

Girls’ Season: League Champions

The girls had an outstanding year, ending with the league championship trophy. Sydney Melody (10) earned the league’s Most Valuable Player award, and many other highlights marked their season. The team also faced changes, including eighth graders moving up to varsity, new assistant coaches, and new leadership positions. Captains Ada Missal (11) and Melody helped the team adapt and build strong chemistry.

“I think as a team, something we did well was adapt to the new players and build our team chemistry,” said Melody.

The girls advanced to districts, hoping to go further than the previous season. Their first district game on Thursday, February 12, was against the Cashmere Bulldogs, where they fell short by six points. On the following Saturday, they played in a winner-advances, loser-out game, earning a clutch victory before ending their season in the next match.

“I think we did really well coming together during the important games and performed our best during league games,” said Missal.

Throughout the season, each player demonstrated determination, motivation, and commitment, making the games exciting for fans. The girls showed they have the skill and dedication to advance further in future districts. Looking ahead, the team hopes to maintain consistency, avoid burnout, and continue improving for the 2026–27 season.

“I think that we all got burnt out towards the end of the season. Next year, we could improve by supporting each other throughout the whole season instead of just at the beginning, and seeing how far we get then,” said Missal.
