One of the most anticipated hallmarks of fall is the return of seasonal drinks, with the pumpkin spice latte (PSL) topping the list. Leavenworth and the surrounding areas offer a variety of coffee shops, including J5 Coffee, Argonaut Coffee and Biscuits, Starbucks, and Gaucho Coffee, all serving their own versions of this autumn classic.

My ideal pumpkin spice latte featured a mild, high-quality coffee complemented by a strong pumpkin flavor, medium spice such as cinnamon, nutmeg, or pumpkin spice, and a level of sweetness that was noticeable but not overpowering.

J5 Coffee

J5 Coffee has a charming storefront filled with seasonal décor and unique trinkets. Their PSL had a pleasant combination of coffee and pumpkin flavor with medium sweetness, though it included an unpleasant nutty aftertaste. Overall, I rated it 3.5/5 stars. The staff were very kind and engaged in conversation while I waited. J5 Coffee is located at 215 9th Street.

Starbucks

“My favorite coffee shop is Starbucks because they have different and interesting drinks compared to the local shops, and they have pumpkin cold foam,” said Audrey Slatta (11).

A classic for a reason, Starbucks offered a well-balanced PSL that was sweet without being overwhelming and flavorful without being excessive. I rated it 4.5/5 stars. The barista provided friendly and polite service. While the interior offered some seating, it was functional but not particularly unique. Starbucks is located at 932 Front Street.

“My favorite coffee shop is Starbucks because they have different and interesting drinks compared to the local shops, and they have pumpkin cold foam,” said Audrey Slatta (11).

Gaucho Coffee

Gaucho Coffee in Cashmere has a rustic atmosphere with warm lighting, vintage furniture, and plants. The PSL there was enjoyable and moderately sweet, though the spice was a bit strong for my taste. I rated it 4/5 stars. Even late in the shop’s hours, the staff remained friendly, helpful, and informative. Gaucho Coffee is located at 111 Railroad Avenue, Cashmere.

“Gaucho Coffee had a very nice atmosphere and a large, appealing menu,” said Parker Hollatz (12).

Argonaut Coffee and Biscuits

Argonaut Coffee and Biscuits is a popular local café in Leavenworth. Its PSL has a strong spice flavor and is lightly sweetened, making it ideal for those who do not have a large sweet tooth. Personally, it was not my ideal PSL, and I rated it 3/5 stars. The staff were friendly and answered questions politely. The store features neutral earth tones and abundant plants, creating a welcoming atmosphere. Argonaut Coffee and Biscuits is located at 220 US Highway 2.

Overall Comparison

Each coffee shop offered a unique take on the classic pumpkin spice latte. J5 Coffee provided a medium-sweet option with a slightly unexpected nutty aftertaste, Starbucks delivered a balanced and approachable flavor with reliable service, Gaucho Coffee offered a cozy, rustic atmosphere with a stronger spice profile, and Argonaut Coffee and Biscuits catered to those who preferred a spicier, less sweet PSL. Each café’s interpretation reflects its individual style and ambiance, giving coffee lovers a variety of choices during the fall season.

Pumpkin spice lattes remain a staple of autumn in Leavenworth, capturing the flavors, warmth, and cozy feelings associated with the season. Whether seeking a sweet treat, a comforting cup of coffee, or an inviting environment to relax, there is a PSL for everyone to enjoy as the leaves change and the cooler months arrive.
