Seniors Win It...Again

Updated: May 9, 2023

No need for a backpack as CHS students bring bags, buckets, lawn mowers, and wheelbarrows to substitute for one. The popular choice was a laundry basket or a pillowcase.

Homecoming week at CHS was filled with spirit and fun. Every day was more fun than the next, with a lot of participation. Here are the six days in review.

Monday

“Soccer mom vs. BBQ dad” was the first theme and had multiple people participating and showing their spirit. Styles that dominated were Lululemon tights, aprons, and trucker hats. “Lots of people dressed up and had fun with it,” said sophomore Preston Pedeferi. “Everyone was into the school spirit.” This made a boring old Monday into something enjoyable, with even teachers participating.

Tuesday

Tuesday brought creativity to the air because of the “anything but a backpack” themed spirit day. The laundry basket was the most popular choice. The day raised the spirit at CHS. “I brought a tub. I just had my binder and notebook in it,” said freshman Chris Roseman. “Definitely more fun than other weeks.” People were laughing. The creative takes on a “backpack” were a good conversation starter. People brought lawn mowers, shopping carts, and buckets.

Wednesday

There is always that neon green highlighter in sixth grade. The first year of middle school introduced Fortnite hoodies, Nike fits, and Hydro flasks as an everyday normal. As people walked through the doors people were greeted by Mr. Joya looking like he was ready to go to school – backpack, tall socks, and all. It was interesting to see all the sixth-grade drip and how much style there was.

That night was the powder puff game: the seniors vs. the juniors. First was the flag football game. The seniors took a commanding lead over juniors, proving victorious. Over at the high school the senior vs. junior boys volleyball game took place. As the juniors took the court in bras and short shorts, the seniors brought the heat with the lumber jack look: flannels and tight jeans. As the crowds cheered, the juniors took the lead as the seniors fought back. In the second quarter, the seniors made the juniors look like kids. They were some good rallies back and forth. In the end, the seniors put in the work and took home the win.

Thursday

The end of the week was in sight, and everybody was getting ready for the homecoming football game. The theme for Thursday was class theme. For the freshman it was classical, sophomores were heavy metal, juniors were rap, and seniors was country. The seniors seemed to be more memorable than the other classes.

Friday

The hype was at its peak on Friday. The Kodiak spirit ran throughout the high school with almost everybody wearing the quintessential gray and red. Outside, it was a little smokey in the morning, but the air quality went downhill from there. The energy was felt all through the school day. At 2:00 p.m. on Friday, the whole school was called down to the commons for an assembly. The assembly was energetic, as Mr. Joya announced the winners of homecoming week. As predicted, the seniors won, the sophomores were second, third were the juniors, finally the freshman brought up the rear. Vincent Slette then took the stage and announced the homecoming royalty. For the freshman: Breigh Ragsdale and Ezra Weeks; Sophomores: Marshet and Grace Redman; Juniors: Scott Linsday and Dolsay Herrera; seniors: Jack Wagman and Emily Reyes Torres. The final announcement was for the king and queen: Jones Duncan and Giselle Navarro.

Needless to say, everyone was hyped up for the homecoming football game. Despite two delays in hopes of the Air Quality Index dropping to acceptable playing levels, it was ultimately postponed. The week after, on Friday the 21st, the homecoming game was rescheduled and played. The Kodiaks played a hard game against Omak. After Omak scored first the Kodiaks were able to drive down the field to score a touchdown. However, there were a couple of CHS turnovers on downs and fumbles. Omak won 42 to 14 but the Kodiaks fought hard and played well.

Saturday

Saturday was the homecoming dance at Icicle River Middle School. It was a nice glance down memory lane. Most attendees enjoyed the music, and everyone had a good time and danced. It was nice to see everybody there.

Most Kodiaks found this year's homecoming to be much more enjoyable and interesting than last year's despite the postponement of the game. As senior Juan Castro said, “More people participated, and it was more fun and enjoyable.” This was a great start to Kodiak spirit and hopefully will continue throughout the school year.
