Teacher Appreciation week at Cascade High School

Teachers, like Mr. Bardseen here volunteering his personal time to help Karla Cacho (11) with her pre-calc homework, are the reason CHS students are so grateful during Teacher Appreciation Week. Photo credit: Avery Houghton

May 6th- May 10th, Cascade High School celebrates teachers throughout the week. Teacher appreciation week is a week where students appreciate teachers, because educators play a vital role in their education and growth. Showing appreciation is a way of acknowledging their hard work and dedication.

Teacher Appreciation week goes back to 1953 when First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt persuaded Congress that there needed to be a specific day to recognize teachers. National Teacher Day was celebrated on March 7th until 1984, when it was moved to May. Behind the move was the National Parent Teacher Association, which expanded the celebration by naming the entire first week of May as Teacher Appreciation Week.

Each year, ASB Leadership takes the time during this special week to show how much the student body at CHS appreciates our dedicated teachers. At the beginning of the week, Leadership students made a box and had notes by the student lounge so students could write about a teacher they appreciate.

Students in AVID had the chance to make cookies for teachers. Mr. Davies 9th grade AVID class decorated cookies so they could give them out to their favorite teachers.

“I made cookies, I didn’t get to bake them, but I decorated them, I wrote letters to teacher Mrs. Sanborn and to paraeducators, because I feel like they do a lot for our school, and we don’t give them enough appreciation that they deserve. I felt good about myself, I felt like a kind soul,” said Adan Vargas (9).

Another student from  AVID class mentioned they also made cookies: “I decorated the cookies for Mr. T Fraker and Mr. Stubblefield. Mr. Stubbs said my cookie looked like Grimace, so he threw it away, said Melania Rodriguez (9).

"It’s a small gesture, but I hope teachers know that Publications sees their dedication and is grateful for them.”

Publications also posted a carousel post in honor of teacher appreciation week. There were a variety of pictures taken throughout the year showcasing teachers helping students. “The students scour all the thousands of photos we take during the year and select a few that really showcase what it means to be a teacher who embodies the Kodiak spirit,” said Publications teacher Ms. Robison. “Then they practice their caption writing skills as the caption the entire post. Finally, an editor takes all of the work and compiles it into one carousel post to honor teachers. It’s a small gesture, but I hope teachers know that Publications sees their dedication and is grateful for them.”

Office staff also helped to let the teachers know that they are valued. “The office staff, and other members who are not a teacher essentially kind of pitched in and we organized so they could have something each day. We did like fruit and yogurt bar, donuts and coffee, we did a flowerpot with seeds and a little treat bag. Treat bags had like bubbly water, chips and you know snacks. On Friday we did like teacher lunch in, Joya and I made some ground beef, and everybody pitched in and got all the fixing for tacos, chips, and lunch stuff. PTSA also brought ice cream from whistle punk so we could do a little sundae ice cream bar. It was super cool; our teachers are awesome. They deserve that every day, said Mrs. Bibby.

A lot of teachers were grateful for the efforts extended by CHS. “I appreciated notes from students that were well thought out and meaningful and I always appreciate the food that’s provided, said Mrs. Krejci.

Especially during teacher appreciation week, it’s important to reflect on the valuable contributions that teachers make to our individual lives, our school and community. Let’s carry forward the spirit of the week by continuing to support and acknowledge our teachers hard work throughout the year. They shape our world by teaching us not just the curriculum, but also the lessons of life. Here’s to our Cascade High School teachers, who inspire us to learn, grow, and strive for excellence every day.
