Track and Field is breaking records this year. Months of training and hard work are paying off for the team with new personal records and some members breaking multiple school records. The team is headed towards Districts and State.
“My goal going into the season was to break the high school long jump record and I broke it twice. It felt unreal when I did because I thought I had a lot of work to get to that point,” Week said.
One of the most noteworthy records was set by Ezra Week (11) during his long jump event at Cashmere where Week placed with a jump measuring 22 feet and 3 inches. The next day, at the Eastmont Twilight Invitational, Week broke the school record and placed first by jumping 22 feet and 9 inches. The previous record was set in 1992, but was surpassed by Week with a margin of 9 inches. Week not only holds Cascade High School’s long jump record but also has the 4th fastest 100-meter dash time for the school. “My goal going into the season was to break the high school long jump record and I broke it twice. It felt unreal when I did because I thought I had a lot of work to get to that point,” Week said.
Week’s performance has impressed head track coach Carl Haberberger. “I knew Ezra was going to be good but what he’s doing is amazing,” Haberberger said.
Haberberger has been pleased with the progress of the whole team so far. “The unknowns are the incoming freshman which are a pleasant surprise this year with some really good field event kids,” Haberberger said.
This success of underclassmen can partially be attributed to the guidance from experienced seniors. Haberberger is impressed with the leadership the seniors have shown this season: “Sometimes seniors have moved onto the next step of their lives but this year's group is focused and being great leaders.”
“The girls team is strong this year; the kind of team that wins the team a score at meets,” said Haberberger. “They’re just fun to watch.”
The team all around is having a season of success, including the girls relay teams and their winning times. “The girls team is strong this year; the kind of team that wins the team a score at meets,” said Haberberger. “They’re just fun to watch.”
The girl’s 4x100m team broke their personal record this year with a time of 51.9 seconds. The 4x100m team of Zoie Burpee (10), Sammantha Crossley (10), Maizy Groff (12), and Karla Cacho (12). This time puts the team first in the Caribou Trail League, 4th in District 5, and 9th in 1A for Washington state. “Comparing our change from this year to last year, our shot at state feels better than ever,” Crossley said.
The girl’s 4x200m team also broke a personal record with a time of 1:50.26. This ranks the team first in the Caribou Trail League, 1st in District 5, and 7th in 1A state. The 4x200m team includes Crossley, Groff, Cacho and Teyva Dillon (12). “Running the 4x200m is an expansion to our potential from the 4x100m team,” Crossley said.
