February is a month filled with love and students and staff at Cascaded High School celebrate this holiday in unique ways. During the week of Valentine’s Day, CHS had some fun activities that happened during flex.

The first day of the week was when the FBLA Hot Cocoa Sales starts. The hot coca sale is run by FBLA, and they have been doing it for four to five years. The hot coca sale is a fundraiser for the club. CHS students went to the student store and signed up and paid for a hot chocolate to be sent another student during class. It is fun, because some students send their valentine anonymously, while others choose to leave their name.

“The reason we started doing this is to bring our kinds and the students together, general population and special education. Just showing that everyone can be friend's,” said paraeducator Jennifer Crossley.”

Another fun activity at CHS is the Valentines Day Hunt during flex. This is run by Ms.Fritz’s classroom. Fritz’s class started to host scavenger hunts around the school December of last year. “The reason we started doing this is to bring our kinds and the students together, general population and special education. Just showing that everyone can be friend's,” said paraeducator Jennifer Crossley.” They do all kinds of hunts like Thanksgiving hunt as well as Christmas hunt. Depending on the theme of the hunt, there are pieces of small cut outs or figurines hidden by students in Fritz’s class all over the school for Kodiaks to find.  On February 13, during Flex, students scoured the halls in search of the hidden hearts.  When they found them, they brought them to the table set up outside of Fritz’s class and entered a drawing for prizes by writing their name on the back. “The prizes were fun and there was a lot of hearts and I found a lot,” said Karla Cacho (12).

On Valentine’s Day, the fun ramped up.  Publications took pictures of students in a photobooth complete with props during Flex.

Leadership hosted minute-to-win-it games, all themed around Valentine’s Day, as well.  The competitions began in each Flex classroom, where two students went head-to-head in sixty seconds of Heart-to-Heart, a fun game where hearts must be moved from one plate to another using only a straw.  The winning students headed to the foyer to represent their Flex classes.  These students battled in Heart on Your Sleeve – a game where students stacked as many conversation hearts as they could on their forearm in a minute.

There were two more rounds before a winner was crowned: Finding the Perfect Match, where students matched symbols on the bottom of Hershey kisses as quickly as possible; and Heart of Dixie, where students attempted to land conversation hearts in Dixie cups from the other end of  a table. In the end, Gretchen Leach (11) and Ethan Flansburg (12) went into a tie-breaking final round and Leach brough the trophy home for Paul Fraker’s advisory class.

Cascade High School’s clubs and leadership work hard to make holidays as festive and fun as possible for students.  In March, there are already plans in place for the third annual 3v3 tournament.
