Braeden Parton (11) gets some serious air as he drives to the hole for a lay-up against Chelan.
Winter Sports at Cascade High School include wrestling, boys' and girls' basketball, and cheerleading. Kodiak athletes work hard, even during Christmas break, to improve and strengthen their skills. Every player comes into the season as an individual ready to expand their knowledge of the sport of their choosing, but at the end of the season, they walk out with new memories, friends, and skills. The community rallies behind these athletes and the stands are filled with cheering students and parents. Any sporting event at Cascade is a social event, kids love to hang out with their friends and cheer their team on. Even families and locals join in and enjoy the events. During the winter, when it is cold out, there are fewer activities to do outside, so students enjoy staying in the gym and watching the athletes demonstrate their skills.
Basketball has many students on the roster; they have three boys’ teams and one varsity girls' team. Attendants at one of Cascade’s basketball games see a lot of aggression and passion from Cascade teams. They keep their energy up the entire game, no matter the score, and never give up hope.
Wrestling has had many away matches and tournaments and their audience is always entertained by the competitors. Their few home matches include January 6, 8, and 26. The team has a large group of boys and one girl, Mya Herrera, who said, “My favorite thing about my team is how close we are and how everyone feels like family.” Westling is a unique experience and is a fantastic way to bond with other students. Senior, Leonardo Garcia Torres, said, “Wrestling at Cascade is fun but also tough. You’re in there everyday of the week working on moves and technique but also spending time with awesome people on the team.” Cascade senior Rally Campbell Baker was placed as one of the top twenty wrestlers in state in late 2021.
Cheerleaders can be seen at any school event at Cascade, uniform or not. They always keep up their smiles and show school spirit. At basketball games, the cheerleaders run halftime games where little kids can win a soda by making a shot into the hoop. Junior, Tania Oyos, loves being a part of the cheerleading team and said that her favorite part of cheerleading “is how funny the girls are and how I can be myself around them.” Cheerleading is a fantastic way to overcome nerves and anxiety, because the team is always close by and ready to help. Our senior cheerleaders, Jayda Marks and Carly Ostrem, are sad to leave their team this year and want their teammates to take on leadership for the underclassmen. “I feel bittersweet about finishing cheer. It has made my highschool experience very memorable and fun. I will miss van rides, games, and my teammates and coach,” said Carly.
If you are getting tired of the same old winter activities keeping you chilly, you should spend some time cheering on your school’s sports teams and hanging out with your friends after school. Many students and families attend Cascade’s sporting events and have a grand time watching their teams fight for each win.
