Prom: Behind the Scenes

Prom is an especially important event for high schoolers, specifically seniors. This puts extra pressure on the planning committee, which in Cascade High School is the Junior Class. There are five main juniors working on planning prom this year: Cassidy Gilespie, Rhetta Cummings, Scott Lindsay, Ellie Holm, Breanna Loomis, and Mrs. Bibby, who will be supervising. These students, and others in Leadership, have been working for months to prepare for this high school rite of passage.

“It's fun to make decisions, but also a little stressful because we want people to enjoy it,” said prom committee member Scott Lindsay (11).

To determine the theme of this year's prom, ASB brainstormed ideas and then made a survey of the theme options and sent it to the seniors. The seniors voted and decided on the theme Masquerade Ball. “I chose the theme Masquerade Ball because it sounded cool, and the most fun to dress up,” said Lauren Haiduc (12). This sparked the start of planning as the juniors knew the direction to go in.

I have been a part of planning and have taken up the decor side of things with help from everyone. First, I made a Pinterest board to get a feel for our theme. Next, I looked at Amazon to see what I could order, I did some budgeting and then I took it to our bookkeeper, Mrs. Osborne, who orders everything for ASB. As we are getting closer to prom, students in Leadership have been helping to make posters, and with other last-minute details and decorations.

To plan prom as a whole, the prom planning committee has been holding meetings weekly starting in March. In those meetings juniors figured out ticket sales, running for royalty, venue, budget, food and drinks, chaperones, decoration, and everything else that goes into planning prom. Because of a limited budget, it was not possible to rent out a venue, so we decided to have prom in the CHS athletic wing. “It's fun to make decisions, but also a little stressful because we want people to enjoy it,” said prom committee member Scott Lindsay (11).

Something surprising for me about planning prom, is the amount of different forms and paperwork required. I had to fill out an activity request form, which asks for chaperones, what music will be provided, signatures from all the executive ASB, and final approvals. Another form we had to fill out was the facility use form, so we could use the athletic wing for prom.

Prom will be Saturday, May 6, in the Athletic Wing of Cascade High School. It will be from 8 pm to 10 pm, and there will be refreshments inside. Tickets will be sold starting Monday. They are $15. A lot of hard work has been put into this event, and we hope to have as many students there as possible!
