Shop and Go

Student volunteer and M.E.T.Ch.A. member Monique Copado (11) donated her time to make this year’s Shop and Go event a success.

Christmas is the best time of year for everyone, it’s a time where you can enjoy the holiday with your loved ones. The Shop and Go was run by Ms. Gonzales this year and it has been a tradition at Cascade High School for three years.

“It was asked of me to kind of run it this year, I love the holidays, I love giving so it really was a no brainer. It was so fun organize all, I would do it next year,” said Ms. Gonzales.

Every year local charity organizations host the Shop and Go event in December so parents can come in and get Christmas presents for their little ones. The Shop and Go is a free elementary event that started on the 8th of December.

The school partnered up with North Central Washington Community Toy Drive in Wenatchee, and they have different kinds of events that also help schools in Wenatchee and Cashmere. In collaboration with this organization, Ms. Gonzales was able to give elementary families free gifts. “It was asked of me to kind of run it this year, I love the holidays, I love giving so it really was a no brainer. It was so fun organize all, I would do it next year,” said Ms. Gonzales.

Not only was she able to get elementary families free gifts, but she was also able to get middle schoolers and high schoolers gifts too.  They got middle schoolers and high schoolers gifts like gift cards, sweaters and hygiene kits. In total they got 620 gifts for the Cascade School District students. The Shop and Go event is basically helping families with free presents for whoever can go in and get some. Overall, there were a total of 180 kids who went to get presents this year.

Ms. Gonzales also asked for some volunteers to help out and wrap gifts at the event for the families that wanted them wrapped. She asked the M.E.Ch.A. club run by Ms. Renner-Singer and the president of M.E.Ch.A., Valeria Oyos (12), to ask the club and see who would like to participate in this event. There were a lot of M.E.Ch.A. students who went to help the school. “They raised money trying to get the presents for the kids that need them, so I thought it was a great thing to be able to help with that to, and make sure kids have presents,’’ said Oyos. The little kids had smiles on their faces when they came to the table full of students ready to wrap their presents.

This is an event that CHS does every year to help families with Christmas presents if needed. These kinds of events allow people at the school to take care of one another.  It is these memories that make the Cascade School District so amazing, because the same kids and families who were able to receive in a time of need in the past are also the ones to give back when they get to participate as volunteers at  this event.
