Cascade Senior, Brooks Scheibler is an outstanding student. He does running start alongside with the Knowledge Bowl Club and many hobbies. People admire and appreciate his kind and sincere words. He does his best to exceed each expectation in his classes at both Cascade High School and running start.
Attending running start at Wenatchee Valley College was a choice Brooks made his first half of senior year to help ease his mind on what he preferred later in his life. He assured, “I chose to do running start for the first half of this year as a way of dipping my toes in the formidable ocean that is college. I felt like taking some college courses in a more relaxed setting would help give me a good idea of what I could expect once I move onto the main event.”
Despite attending school outside of CHS virtual walls, he still makes times for his friends by playing video and board games or competing in Knowledge Bowl Club together.
Knowledge Bowl is a club that is represented by groups of students and their head coach, Mr. Massey. It is similar to the game called Jeopardy: each player answers a question in the form of a question or a wonder. One of his teammates, senior Leora Aurilio said, “My favorite memory of him is Knowledge Bowl this year, he’s awesome at the science questions and just fun to talk to!” Brooks said, “Knowledge bowl is the only club I’ve really been an active part of. I relish in putting over a decade of random useless facts to use in competitive format, and the environment of knowledge bowl as a whole is very entertaining as it attracts a very intellectual crowd that always seems to have something new to talk about.”
Mr. Massey taught Brooks’ Precalculus, Calculus I, and Calculus II. When asked what kind of student Brooks was, he exclaimed, “My first impression of Brooks was that he was a deep thinker who took learning seriously!” Mr. Massey went on to say, “He was determined to understand everything and had no problem working hard until he figures it out and got the right answer. Brooks is definitely a math/science person. He enjoys the logic and analytical thinking that math and science require. Brooks stands out by his persistence and ability to quickly grasp new concepts.” It is clear that Brooks is admired by not only his classmates but also his teachers.
His hobbies include reading, gaming, and hiking. He stated, “I enjoy reading and gaming because I am incredibly lazy, and really enjoy storytelling and the idea of exploring foreign worlds. Hiking is more of a, ‘Well, if I can’t be sedentary, might as well admire nature for a bit.’” He also read interesting books with plot twists, which include, The Man Who Mistook his Wife for a Hat by Oliver Sacks, He described the book as “abnormal psychology.” He also read The History of the Ancient World: From the Earliest Accounts to the Fall of Rome by Susan Bauer, which is helpful for Brooks as he cheered, “The second book is good study material for Knowledge Bowl.”
Brooks finds joy in playing video games. “I have an entire portfolio of different games I’ve played. It’s difficult to say I enjoy one kind more than another” He marveled. He decided to mention three games he has played over the past year, Hades, Red Dead Redemption ll, and Disco Elysium. “I just revel in learning all of the different mechanics behind every individual game and getting to experiment.”
Brooks has a brother named Haakon who is a sophomore student at CHS. Haakon said, “Brooks is a really interesting person, as a brother I think he’s super helpful and a very intelligent person.” We had a few classes together and it was good to have a few classes while we still could. I definitely admire Brooks’ intelligence and his knowledge of science.”
When asked who he admired he replied with, “Definitely my brother, Haakon. When he commits to something, he commits hard. Whether its mastering every aspect of the video games we play together online or reading three entire biographies of Theodore Roosevelt to ensure he knows literally everything about anything related to the founder of the Bull Moose party. His dedication to subjects he enjoys is truly impressive.”
At the end of the day, everyone has goals they would like to accomplish. When Brooks graduates high school, he ideally wants to go to “University of Washington.” Another goal of his is, “Go out with some friends for a card and board games, but only if COVID-19 pandemic is gone.” He explained his final goal as he sighed, “Making it to state in Knowledge Bowl would be great, if Knowledge Bowl continues to exist in spite of the pandemic.” Goals don’t always turn out the way they were intended to, but Brooks won’t hesitate to find solutions or alternatives to his.
Brooks is loved by his family, friends, and teachers, because of his intelligent mind, kindness, and personality.
