Student in the Spotlight: Mya Herrera

Our girls wrestling team captain and our wrestler who has gone to state twice is helping pave the way for our girls wrestling team before she moves on from Cascade High School.

“Mya’s leadership helps the team because she’s really positive and you know she cares about her teammates. She’s always giving extra effort in practices which shows that she wants to be a captain,” said Sandoval.

Mya Herrera (12) is a very athletic student and shows this through wrestling and soccer; she dedicates herself to her sports and always pushes herself further with each loss and win. Mya not only pushes herself but also pushes her teammates.

“Her personality was awesome and amazing; it was great, and I loved it so much. Her personality really really fired up everybody,” said teammate Karlyn Kocher (12).

“She’s a very outgoing person, she works hard at practice. She’s one of our top wrestlers in the Cascade program who has gone to state and placed,” explained Angel Sandoval (12).

“Mya’s leadership helps the team because she’s really positive and you know she cares about her teammates. She’s always giving extra effort in practices which shows that she wants to be a captain,” said Sandoval. It’s safe to assume that her fellow team captains are just as excited to be one with Herrera.

Though Mya may be fun and carefree, she also knows when to get down to business. Her teammates love her strong personality and how straight forward she can be. “She’s really honest with us, and she’s brutally honest she isn’t rude, but she will tell you the truth and she doesn’t let anyone walk all over her. When people may be messing around during practice, she tells them to knock it off otherwise we will have to do conditioning. She’s very straight forward,” explained Kat Kocher (10). Even with the stress of being a team captain, Herrera is still excited to be on the wrestling team this year and to hold a high position.

“I’m happy that I am [the team captain] and it would’ve been sad if I wasn’t, but it's fun to have Pacheeks and Angel there by my side,” said Herrera.

“I think Mya is one of the nicest people in our school. Mya is an elite athlete and she’s got a lot going on but she’s always very nice to anyone who interacts with her,” said Juan Fonseca (12). Photo Credit: Avery Houghton.

Mya is not only a good team captain, she’s also a good friend. One of her best friends is Anaii Mendoza (12), and you will usually find this pair talking about their sports or just having a good laugh. “Mya is outgoing, funny and honest. She’s also an awesome person, I love her to death. Mya is practically like family she’s like my sister We have lots of fun and make lots of hot chocolate,” said Mendoza.

“She’s very goofy and she’s a really bubbly person when she wants to be. My favorite memories with mya are our dog fights and whenever we go shopping,” explained Kat Kocher.

Her fellow team captain Angel also shared a favorite memory: “When we were little, I would have to wrestle her, and she would always beat me, and she was really good so that’s probably a good memory.”

It is obvious that Mya is very well loved within her friend groups, and they hope for the best for her. “She’s a great person and I think she will go a long ways in her life, she has a lot going for her right now,” said Zach Karnes (12).

“Mya is very outgoing no matter who you are, she’s always down to talk to you about anything and she’s very nice,” said Juan Fonseca (12).

Whether you know Mya or not, it’s clear to see that our wrestler will always be kind to her friends, peers, and to people she doesn’t know.

Cascade High School wishes the best for Herrera during her wrestling season and can’t wait to see what other victories Mya will bring for Cascade this year.
