The Annual MEChA Coin Drive

CHS students donated spare change in boxes, like this one, placed in their second period classes. “It is important to participate because you are giving back to the kids who need it the most during this time,” said M.E.Ch.A. President Valeria Oyos (12).

Every year the M.E.Ch.A. Club hosts a coin drive for students to participate in. The club collects money to donate to Upper Valley Mend, a non-profit organization located in Leavenworth that “envisions an empowered community with equitable access to food, housing, wellness and economic security.”

Every day starting on December 4th until December 12th, someone from the M.E.Ch.A. club puts little coin boxes in each classroom until the end of the day for students and staff to add coins or extra change to donate. Last year Mecha raised over 1,000 dollars and this year the goal is to raise more than that.

The coin drive helps and supports Upper Valley Mend by having the opportunity to get money for the holidays. This coin drive is not only important to Cascade High School, but to the people getting the help they need this year with the holidays coming up. “It benefits the Upper Valley Mend [organization], because they get a little extra help with presents this year and next year with money,” said Valeria Oyos (12).

So far, many students and staff have participated in the coin drive, and it is overall succeeding this year. As the days go by and club members empty out the coin boxes, they hope to get more and more money every day for this good cause.
