Student in the Spotlight: Julia Vandel

Juila has been actively involved in ASB for all four of her years at Cascade and was elected to the position of president her senior year.ASB advisor Mr. Joya said, “She has been an excellent leader and role model. She has brought in some great ideas for the school. Her biggest thing is that she cares for every student, not just her types of students.” Julia is always willing to lend a helping hand with school events. Leadership teacher Ms. Robison said, “Even though Julia is not enrolled in Leadership class, every time there has been a need for a volunteer, she has willingly stepped up and with a great attitude.”


One of her biggest passions is choir. She had been a crucial part of the choir program since the 6th grade. Julia is not only a member of the program, but a leader there as well. Cascade choir teacher Ms. Wall said, “Juila is the steady rock she is an amazing leader and always thinks of thing from a very logical perspective.” Julia serves as a mentor to other, younger members of the program. Fellow choir student senior Annie Bowles said, “She is a bright, loving sunshine” and “she is a great leader and makes sure that everyone is on board with what is going on.” Junior Carly Ostrem appreciates Julia’s contributions to the CHS chorale program as well. Carly said, “She is really fun to be around and fun to sing with in choir. And whenever I see her, she just puts a smile on my face.”


Julia has also played a critical role in Publications where she has been a staff member, an Advanced Publications student and an editor. As an editor, Julia carefully checks articles and yearbook pages to make sure they are free of errors and represent Kodiak students well. Publications advisor Ms. Robison said, “Julia is a really valuable part of the team. She is excellent at people skills, which is a huge part of pub, and she is extremely reliable. She also brings so much joy to the Publications team and is always making her classmates feel welcome and valued.” Co-editor Ruthie Biebesheimer works closely with Julia. She said, “Juila is so friendly and outgoing and really good at getting good quotes for yearbook and making everyone feel welcome." Even freshman staffers appreciate Julia’s leadership on the team. Freshman Jailyn Reinhart said, “She always puts in extra work and the work she does it always very well done.”


Even though Julia did not get to play her senior year, her presence on the volleyball team is remembered fondly. Cascade Athletic Director Mr. Coffin said, “She just works hard and gave it her all whenever she was out there. She is a great person to have on your team.” Her teammates agree. Junior Ava Northrup said, "Julia is constantly positive and a constant light on the court. As a captain, she was an incredible leader. She showed me the importance of being a caring and loving team member. Her enthusiasm helped everyone to maintain positivity.”

In addition to impressive extra-curricular involvement, Julia is a phenomenal student. Her English teacher Ms. Brixey said, “She uses her formidable intelligence to do great things.” Principal Mr. Daley said, “She just has a great spark to her keeps everything in a positive manner, positive attitude whether its discussions about interesting topics or just going about her own business in a normal school day.”


Julia is an awesome, funny person to be around and always has a big smile on her face. She loves to go on walks with her dog and hanging out with friends and family. Senior Landon Davies said, “Julia is just one of my best friends and it is always a joy to spend time with her.”

Next year Julia plans to go to Northwest Nazarene University and study elementary education - she hopes to become an elementary school teacher. There is no doubt that her positive attitude and willingness to take on leadership roles will serve her well as an educator.
